I’m sorry, but getting parts delivered on time to a customer shouldn’t be a differentiator. Has the bar really descended that low? Now I realize that not every job goes to plan. As much as we try to plan proactively as manufacturers, there’s always hurdles that get in the way of parts getting out the door on time. This should be the exception though, not the rule. At Hill, our motto is to deliver quality parts on time, every time. Why? Because we believe that this is the normal mode of operation that our customers deserve to expect. Yet finding reliable vendors like us has become a real challenge for OEMs and product manufacturers across America. Let’s acknowledge that the past five years really haven’t made this easy. You might even say that 2020-2025 have put American Manufacturing through the proverbial “wringer”. COVID made for many unforeseen operational challenges that we needed to quickly adapt to. Post-COVID supply chain challenges have had us all on our toes. Now in 2025, we might be feeling a little anxious to see how tariffs are going to affect supply chains and input costs. What that actually means in the final analysis, no one yet knows.

Here’s the thing that we do know: there’ll always be challenges getting in the way. What that means for us at Hill is that we’re tasked with the job of rising to the occasion despite the challenges. The only reason we get to be successful as a company is that we help our customers be successful. We aren’t here to “pass the buck” of supply chain challenges down the line, we’re going to overcome them so that our customers can win the day. One of the main ways we can do that is to deliver quality parts on time so that the OEMs and Manufacturers we supply don’t have to deal with unreliable parts that arrive late—complicating timelines and straining budgets. It just doesn’t need to be this way.

At Hill Manufacturing and Fabrication, we understand the pressure that our customers are under to keep projects on time and on budget. They’re relying on us to deliver install-ready parts on time to enable their production to be on time and on budget. For the past 50 years that we’ve been in business, our streamlined approach has enabled our customers to focus on just that, knowing that they have a reliable partner dedicated to their success. It wouldn’t have happened unless we made it a priority.

The emotional toll of juggling unreliable vendors can be immense. Missing deadlines, navigating quality issues, and coordinating a long list of vendors for a single project can leave you feeling overwhelmed and hinder your company’s growth. But there’s a simpler way forward.

First, establish a clear understanding of your current situation as it relates to supplier performance. Evaluate which vendors reliably deliver quality parts and which consistently fall short. An objective review of your supply chain will give you insights into areas needing attention and potentially identify any vendors who need to be cut loose from your supplier list.

Second, consider implementing a formalized system of communication for your outsourced work. Regularly update all stakeholders and set clear expectations to help prevent misunderstandings with regard to timelines.

Third, make a commitment to a continuous improvement mindset. Embrace innovative technologies that help monitor processes and enhance performance. This might include manufacturing specific ERP systems, MRP solutions , and inventory management software. This willingness to adapt can set your operations up for enduring success.

Fourth, assess whether your current supplier network is optimized. Look to partner with vendors that can handle a wide array of the manufacturing processes that you often require. This results in requiring fewer vendors to be involved in the procurement process resulting in fewer timelines to manage, less risk, and less headache. This is precisely why our customers prefer to work with the Hill Group because we are often able to handle everything in-house. Meaning that they’ll receive install-ready parts all from a single vendor..

Fifth, prioritize quality. Prioritize vendors who truly understand your quality standards and can demonstrate their ability to adhere to them. This ultimately leads to consistent performance and less rework. Nothing kills a timeline quite like non conforming parts that are either scrap or at the very least need to be sent back for re-work.

On time delivery doesn’t happen by accident. Until you understand the preconditions that are necessary to receive quality part on time from your vendor network, you’ll be needlessly risking continued frustrations, delayed shipments, quality fluctuations, and the potential for lost business contracts.

Alternatively, by making some small changes and professionalizing your vendor management process, you’ll not only alleviate the frustration of late shipments, but also enable your organization to succeed with on-time production of the goods you bring to the market.
